Camps & Retreats Ministries leaders demonstrate how we’ll attempt to set a Guinness World Record at the 2018 Annual Conference.

The South Carolina Annual Conference invites you to be part of a memorable – and hopefully world-record-setting – afternoon of service and fun during our Annual Conference gathering in Greenville on Tuesday, June 5.

On that day, delegates and non-delegates alike will have an opportunity to be part of the Annual Conference Mission Initiative, during which we will package more than 10,000 UMCOR Health Kits to support the UMC’s Abundant Health Initiative.

After that good work, we will turn to our Hulapalooza Celebration – an attempt to break a Guinness World Record for the longest human chain to pass through a hula hoop! The current world record is 572, and we hope to have more than 600 people in our human chain!

Check out this video to see how it’s done:

As you can see in the video, people of all ages and abilities can participate. You only need to be willing and able to:

  • Take a place in the chain by holding hands with people on either side
  • Pass a hula hoop over your head
  • Step through it and pass it along to the next person in the chain

Did we mention that everyone in the chain has to hold hands throughout the entire event?

As you might imagine, setting a world record comes with plenty of rules you might want to consider as you decide whether to join us. Here are a few:

  • We will begin the process of forming our chain at 4:30 p.m. in the Level 1 Conference Hall of the TD Convention Center. As you enter, you will receive a ticket so we can get an accurate count of the number of people participating.
  • There will be separate, marked entrances for participants and those who want to watch and cheer on the effort. Barricades will define the area where viewers must remain. Participants must not cross those barriers so we can be accurate in our count.
  • Participants should use the restroom before entering, because you will be in the room for about two hours and you will not be able to leave until the attempt is complete.
  • Once we the chain is formed – by holding hands with persons on your right and left – it cannot be broken until the hula hoop makes it to the end of the chain. This could take up to 90 minutes.

If you think that you can commit to these requirements, we hope you will join us on June 5th – BRING SOME FRIENDS – and be a part of doing something to promote Abundant Health in God’s world, as well as our Guinness World Record Hulapalooza Celebration!

June 5 schedule

  • 2 p.m. – We will be packaging Health Kits starting at 2 p.m. June 5 at the TD Convention Center in Greenville.
  • 4:30 p.m. – Inspired by Bishop L. Jonathan Holston’s Hulapalooza Challenge, we will be trying to break a Guinness World Record for the number of people who can hold hands, forming a long chain of humanity, and step one-by-one through a hula hoop without anyone on the chain losing hold of the hands on either side.
  • Following the hula hoop event, the conference will host a hot dog supper for youth who registered to volunteer.
