Featured speakers include Bishop L. Jonathan Holston, resident bishop of the S.C. Conference; Rev. Dr. Susan Henry-Crowe, general secretary of the UMC’s General Board of Church & Society; Bishop James E. Swanson, resident bishop of the Mississippi Conference; the Rev. Dr. William Bobby McClain, retired seminary professor, author and historian of African-Americans in the UMC; and Bishop Woodie W. White, bishop-in-residence at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.

The purpose of the Academy is to equip laity and clergy for ministry and leadership within the church. The academy will empower individuals with biblical knowledge, intellectual growth and theological reflection, thereby enhancing church development, renewal and mission outreach.

The Academy intends to:

  • Unite laity and clergy
  • Establish church leadership
  • Increase awareness of the role of Christian education in the church
  • Offer cross-cultural experiences within the church
  • Enhance church/university relationship
