First UMC Wadesboro (just over the border in NC!) is seeking applications for a part time organist.

The Organist leads worship through music: setting the tone for worship through solo pieces as well as supporting congregational and choral singing on organ and piano. This part time role is highly collaborative with other church staff so that the mission and values of the church are in the forefront. This part-time position is hired by and accountable to the Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) and reports directly to the Music Director.

The salary range is $12,000-$16,000 per year.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Music Director & Senior Pastor to plan & facilitate worship
    • Prepare hymns and music selected by Music Director
    • Select and prepare 2-3 pieces of music per week (Prelude, Postlude, and sometimes offertory/other special music)
    • Regular meetings with staff to evaluate and plan worship
    • Be responsive to leadership of Music Director in choir rehearsals, planning/evaluation, and worship
    • Accompany choir on organ or piano during worship
  • Be present and prepared for choir rehearsals on Wednesday nights (August- May)
  • Lead worship on Sunday mornings in collaboration with other staff
  • Be available to play for special worship services during the liturgical year (usually including but not limited to: Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday or Maundy Thursday/Good Friday, Easter, Thanksgiving service)
  • The Organist will be the first call for weddings and funerals, especially when held in our sanctuary or chapel. Practice flexibility and good communication when these services are being planned. (Honorariums for funerals and weddings are provided by families.)
  • Develop a great working relationship with all staff and serve as a support to the Leadership Council
  • Be open to receiving feedback from the Music Director, Senior Pastor, & SPRC
  • Participate in annual job performance review coordinated through the SPRC, including the establishment and evaluation of annual goals
  • Perform other duties as needed

Desired Qualifications

  • Supports the mission and vision of the church
  • Training and experience playing piano and pipe organ
  • Ability to sight-read, especially choral music (accompaniment and choral parts)
  • Proficiency with playing individually as well as supporting groups
  • Consistency in presence, character, and preparation
  • Ability to work well with and adapt to the needs of others
  • Excellent communication skills
