The Academy of Faith and Leadership at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary will play host to “Mental Health: Opportunities and Challenges for Congregations” from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 10.
Many adults and parents of children and adolescents report discomfort in churches that fail to acknowledge the challenges surrounding mental health and developmental issues. Mental health conditions can affect a person’s mind, feelings, and mood, and it can affect their relationship with God and interactions with their church family.
This seminar will help ministers and lay leaders identify the diverse and unique needs of individuals, from childhood to adulthood, who live with mental health conditions. How can the church provide care and walk alongside members who struggle with mental health conditions? How can the church be a welcoming and safe place for all?
Dr. Amy Montanez and Dr. Kenneth Phelps will lead this seminar.
Montanez is a licensed professional counselor, licensed marriage and family therapist, coach, and spiritual director with over 25 years of experience.
Phelps is an associate professor of clinical neuropsychiatry and adjunct associate professor of clinical pediatrics at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, where he is also director of the Outpatient Psychiatric Clinic.
Lunch will be provided. Registration is required. 0.5 CEUs are available with purchase of a CEU ticket. General admission is $35. General admission with 0.5 CEUs is $40.
