“We Lead, We Care, We Communicate”
To equip God’s people to do God’s work and build up the church, the body of Christ. (Ephesians 4:11-12) Lay Servant Ministries provides training to equip laity to be leaders in mission and ministries in the local church and community. Each of us is gifted by the Holy Spirit to be a servant in God’s kingdom. Lay Servant Ministries provides educational opportunities to enhance those gifts and build the needed skills to enable us to be more effective Christian leaders. Through Lay Servant Ministries Schools, we gain biblical knowledge and wisdom to help us make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
Certified Lay Servant
As United Methodists, we believe our faith – if it is to have any validity – must be lived out in our lives and in the life of the world. Consequently, our faith must be a living, vital, acting faith that seeks to transform the world or, in John Wesley’s words, “to spread scriptural holiness over the land.” Becoming a certified lay servant in the United Methodist Church prepares a person for ministry in whatever area they choose. Lay Servant Ministries involves leading, caring and communicating. A certified lay servant may choose to lead a Bible study, start a prayer ministry, teach Sunday school, participate in a prison ministry or visit the elderly and shut-ins. Each district usually offers a Lay Servant Basic Course for beginners. After the Basic Course, you must complete a Lay Servant Advanced Course to become a certified lay servant. Certified lay servants must complete an Advanced Course every three years to remain certified. Individuals desiring to maintain the status of a local church lay servant are required to take a Lay Servant Renewal Course every three years.
Certified Lay Speaker
Inclusive in Lay Servant Ministries is a track for lay speakers, primarily for those with gifts to share and who can serve as pulpit supply. The required courses are the Lay Servant Basic Course, United Methodist Heritage, United Methodist Polity, Worship, Leading in Prayer, Discovering Spiritual Gifts, and Preaching. Talk to your pastor, district superintendent and district lay servant leader to help you discern if this is one of your spiritual gifts.
Certified Lay Minister
A Certified Lay Minister desires to further his/her calling to preach the word, provide a care ministry to the congregation, assist in program leadership and be a witness in the community for the growth and missional and connectional thrust of the United Methodist Church as part of a ministry team with the supervision and support of a clergy person. The Superintendent of a District assigns a Certified Lay Minister to a particular ministry within the South Carolina Annual Conference. X
