Bishop L. Jonathan Holston is inviting all South Carolina United Methodists to join him for an Interfaith Peace Walk this Saturday, June 20, in downtown Columbia. 

The walk – hosted by Bishop Samuel L. Green Sr. and the African Methodist Episcopal Church – is designed as a visible witness in the journey toward justice and racial reconciliation.

Schedule

All times approximate

  • 11 a.m. – Gather at Allen University Campus Mall
  • 11:30 a.m. – Depart to the State House (1.4 miles) – following Taylor Street eastward to Sumter Street, then south to the capital. 
  • 1 p.m. (or upon arrival at State House) – Speakers

Water stations will be available along the route. Food trucks will be set up near the State House.

The event is the culmination of the celebration of Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865 – when African Americans in Texas learned of their freedom from slavery under the Emancipation Proclamation.

The AME Church also has declared this week the Juneteenth Week of Action.
