Audio Technician-Traditional Worship

Part-Time (1/4 time), Exempt

Salary Range: $14,000-$16,000

Summary

St. John’s United Methodist Church in Aiken, South Carolina, is seeking applicants for the position of Audio Technician for Traditional Worship. This person will be responsible for directing, leading, and training the audio technical production teams in support of traditional worship, as well as providing audio support for church programing and/or scheduling technicians as needed. We currently have traditional worship services at 8:30am and 11:00am that include choir and organ each week, often also supported by piano, solo instrumentalists, and chamber orchestra.

Typical Work Week

The principal in-person responsibilities of this position will occur between 7:30am and 1:00pm on Sundays, conducting soundchecks prior to both traditional worship services, and administering both live and recorded audio mixes. Remaining responsibilities during a typical week may require an additional visit to the church (e.g. attending a rehearsal prior to Sunday when the choir will make a major presentation with orchestra to ensure proper placement of microphones for superior recording), but much of it may be done remotely (e.g. editing the audio recording of the 11:00am service for submission for our weekly radio broadcast that is on a one-week delay and meeting 1-2 times per month with the worship design team).

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 3-5 years experience as a sound engineer in either a church or a performance venue specializing in classical music. The ideal candidate will be experienced in simultaneously providing unique house and recording mixes and doing so within an acoustically-reverberant environment, providing crisp spoken word amplification and recording and minimal amplification but superior recording of acoustically-derived music governed by the principal where the conductor or performers are primarily responsible for balance and blend and the sound engineer is responsible for recording music as close to how it is experienced in the natural acoustic as possible.

Application

A full position description is available upon request. A complete application will consist of a resume with links to samples of a candidate’s audio recording experience along with three professional references.

Please submit completed applications or questions to Dr. Matt Caine, Director of Traditional Music, mcaine@stjohns-umc.org.
