Bishop Holston reminds us that “On Sunday, December 17, 2012, the people in Newtown, Connecticut gathered for worship at the Newtown United Methodist Church.  Their pastor, the Rev. Mel Kawakami, led the congregation through a time of prayer and communion.  They were encouraged “to turn to one another, to turn to God, turn to the child who came to lead us, Emmanuel, who came to remind us, ‘Do not be afraid.’”  As laity and clergy across South Carolina search for the right words or actions to respond to the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, let us pray through our own grief to find more gentle and intentional ways to practice our faith as we turn to God in the proclamation of joy for the coming of the Christ child.  In the days ahead, we can pray for the families and send letters to the community at Newtown United Methodist Church.  This is a special time for us all to realize that we are not alone.”
