Helping Disciples Move Forward in Faith
As United Methodists, our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Making disciples doesn’t happen randomly. It requires a plan, a system that is designed for their context that allows disciples on any point in their faith journey to move to the next step in that journey as they grow toward maturity as a disciple.
Having an intentional discipleship process will help your congregation be able to define what a disciple is, what characteristics of a disciple you want to focus on, and how to develop and create a step-by-step pathway for disciples to reach spiritual maturity.
Connecting With & Growing Disciples
Follow Me Together is designed to focus on one of the South Carolina Conference’s Our 4 Priorities – “Connecting With & Growing Disciples.” As a follow up to the Conference Connectional Ministries sermon resources “Come, Follow Me,” this workshop is designed to be a beginning point for churches to create and ultimately implement a plan for intentional discipleship growth.
To that end, we encourage congregations to send a small team (4-6 persons) from to participate in the workshop. During the workshop, your team will have time to work through the process of laying a foundation that eventually will become the congregation’s Intentional Discipleship System.
By the end of the retreat, your team will have a framework for an Intentional Discipleship System, complete with instructions and resources to help finalize the system and implement it into the life of your congregation.
What This Workshop Will Do
Participants will:
- Gain an understanding of the shift from church membership to discipleship.
- Discover your congregation’s “why”.
- Recognize the impact that an Intentional Discipleship System can have in the life of your congregation.
- Create a definition of disciple, identify characteristics of a disciple your congregation wishes to develop in its participants, and discern some transformational steps in the disciple-making process.
- Evaluate current ministries of your congregation through the lens of those identified characteristics and transformational steps.
- Begin to create an Intentional Discipleship System for your congregation
