Dr. Hodge\, superintendent of the Rock Hill District\, will lead discussion on Christ’s inviting the disciples to come\, follow him\, and the odd situations that puts a follower in. There is sacrifice\, the pressure of being different – even danger – but Christ is always there to teach us\, call us friends\, and empower us with the Holy Spirit. \nRev. Owens\, a retired UMCSC elder who works full-time as a spiritual director\, will use the disciple Peter as a model of a first follower – the impulsiveness\, the foolishness\, the mistakes\, the learning curve\, and finally the empowered leader able to stand solid before the world’s authorities. \nReflection time and guided meditations will help participants refocus themselves on being followers of Christ\, in order to be leaders for Christ. We also will be discussing “How to Start a Movement\,” a TED Talk by entrepreneur Derek Sivers. Miriam Mick\, pastor of Aldersgate UMC and Inman UMC \nDate/Time: October 12\, 10-11:30 a.m. \nWhile the Divine sometimes affords us a bubble of grace from which to do our public work\, at times when the losses and funerals pile up\, it becomes too much. While we want to allow ourselves to model the experience of grief for our congregations\, self-care is necessary to continue to pastor in the midst of our pain and our helplessness in alleviating the pain of the work\, but have not learned to live fully in God’s abiding presence. \nGod is as close as our breath. However\, many of us have not developed mindfulness of God’s presence. The fruit of practicing the presence of God is a life more fully aligned with God’s purposes. We are more able to listen for what God has to say to us. We experience a depth of intimacy with God. God becomes our constant companion.
