University City United Methodist Church (UCUMC), located in Charlotte, NC, is seeking a full-time Director of Youth Ministry (6th – 12th graders) effective immediately. This position is open to applicants with a vision and passion for teenagers to know Jesus, to seek to follow Him in their daily lives, and to serve others so they might also know Him and His love for them.

The Director of Youth Ministry is responsible for maintaining accountability and providing leadership, guidance, supervision and direction for the Youth Ministry Program at UCUMC, within the guidelines of the church’s Vision and Mission Statements. Applicants should therefore possess the skills and vision needed to develop and implement programs and opportunities to better connect youth to Jesus, the church, the community, and to one another. The ideal candidate will be comfortable leading and serving the students and families who are currently in the church, and also reaching out into our community to engage with new students and families to help them connect to Christ and our church.
Required qualifications: (1) a Christian commitment to Jesus Christ, (2) a comfort with and willingness to share the Gospel to groups of youth/adults, (3) a minimum age of 23 years, (4) educational training or previous work experience related to youth, youth education, youth leadership, or youth development, (5) a knowledge of and connection with the culture of today’s youth, (6) an energetic, passionate and people-oriented personality, (7) a comfort with and ability to work with youth of diverse backgrounds and capabilities, (8) strong organizational/time management skills, with an attention to detail, (9) the ability to work independently—i.e., a proven self-starter—as well the ability to work as part of a team, (10) strong verbal and written communication skills, including communication through email and social media platforms, and (11) basic knowledge of word processing/spreadsheet tracking software, such as that in Microsoft Office Suite.

Preferred qualifications: (1) a member of the United Methodist Church and/or familiar with the teachings and practices of the United Methodist Church, (2) prior work experience in youth ministry, (3) prior experience leading Bible studies or Sunday School classes, or teaching/preaching the Gospel, (4) a degree in Christian education, religious studies, or related field, (5) prior experience leading a team and delegating tasks accordingly, (6) prior experience recruiting, training, equipping and empowering volunteers to lead, (7) prior experience in planning and executing group events, and (8) prior experience developing and managing an operating budget.

About UCUMC…
UCUMC is located in northern Charlotte. The church is led by one senior pastor and one associate pastor, and has a membership of approximately 1,000. We offer one traditional worship service and one contemporary worship service each Sunday morning with a total average worship attendance of 400. The youth program has approximately 70 active students involved in a variety of worship, service, fellowship and spiritual growth opportunities. A team of adult volunteers helps the Director of Youth Ministry oversee these youth activities and lead youth small groups.

A Search Committee composed of parents, youth small group leaders, students and staff will be conducting the initial interview process. Final interviews and hiring decisions are conducted by the church’s Staff Parish Relations Committee.
