Each year South Carolina United Methodists support hunger-related ministries through our
Advent and Lenten Hungrief offerings. Gifts sent to our conference treasurer earmarked for
Hungrief are divided, with 80% going to support our World Hunger Special Programs, and 20%
retained for use in hunger-related ministries throughout South Carolina.
This past year we have supported ministries that feed the hungry in Camden, Lamar,
Bennetsville, and Columbia. Please watch your Advocate for stories about our Hungrief
offerings over the next couple of months.
Enclosed is a copier-ready bulletin insert for you to use. We still have some of the inserts
already printed at the UMCenter. Please contact Tammy Fulmer (888/678-6272,
tfulmer@umcsc.org) at the Connectional Ministries Office if you would like these.
Following Lent, please have your church treasurer remit the funds to the conference treasurer,
earmarked “Hungrief.”
On a related note, our support of Hungrief offerings has been declining over the past few years,
yet the need has been growing. The Conference Board of Global Ministries is working to help
our churches and conference get more involved in hunger ministries. We are looking at forming
a Hunger Ministry Task Force. If you or a member of your congregation is interested in being on
this ministry team, please contact me at michaelh@cayceumc.org.
Thank you for all you do! Jesus said, “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” Let’s
continue to serve Christ by serving our brothers and sisters in need.

Grace and Peace,

Michael B. Henderson
