SIMPSONVILLE – When a tornado with winds up to 110 mph touched down in Simpsonville, an Early Response Team from the S.C. Conference of the United Methodist Church was on the scene within hours.

The eight-person team worked on six homes struck by the Nov. 30 storm, removing trees and other storm debris and covering damaged roofs with tarps provided by the United Methodist Committee on Relief.

“Although the tornado did not meet FEMA requirements, people still experienced destruction and loss of their home,” said Nathan Welch, disaster response coordinator for the Greenville District. “Some in the area will need help with recovery and starting over.

“We teach in the ERT class about the three levels of disaster – low, medium and high – but the common term in all of these is disaster.”

Welch commended Greenville District Lay Leader Michael Cheatham and members of Augusta Road UMC, Advent UMC and Simpsonville UMC for their tremendous work.

“The community really pulled together to get things cleaned up,” he said.
