The 2016 General Conference is underway and so far our SC Delegates have been busy!
From the moment the procession began, opening worship was a true celebration of our global connection. It was filled with Pentecost moments where many languages were spoken and sung, sometimes simultaneously. We were welcomed by Katherine Jones Harrison, a representative from the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest. She reminded us that even though we may all look different, our hearts beat the same.
Our United Methodist diversity is a strength as God does mighty work through faithful disciples all around the world. Sharing communion with our brothers and sisters from throughout the connection was a holy experience. Worship has been amazing! Bishop Gregory Palmer’s Episcopal address had me on my feet clapping. He reminded us as UM we are making a difference in the world through such things as imagine no malaria, working with UMCOR in disaster relief (as we saw firsthand in SC this past fall), and the importance of our work with children. He said too often we allow the “other” stuff to over shadow our mission to make disciples for the transformation of the world. Also, the music has been absolutely incredible. The songs, the singers, the diversity and the talented folks who are sharing their God given talents through the old traditional hymns and a blend of contemporary songs. I look forward to worship because it keeps me centered in the midst of all the “other stuff” that is a large part of GC. – Barbara Ware

I am genuinely humbled by the overwhelming holiness of worship and spiritual engagement! The genuine show of love in the many languages is phenomenal. Connectionalism has taken on a more profound meaning in light of the embracing global warmth being experienced. Presented messages and singing are magical, uplifting and God-inspired that takes my breath away. The inclusion of all cultures, identities, perspectives and ages are magnificent…and this is just the beginning. I can hardly wait for more. – Jackie Jenkins
