L. Jonathan Holston, bishop of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, presided over the election of a new bishop this weekend.

The West Africa Central Conference met to elect a new bishop to replace the retired Bishop John Innis, who has served as resident bishop of the Liberia Annual Conference for 16 years.

Bishop Holston presided over the Episcopal Election on Saturday.

“On behalf of the UMC Council of Bishops, I have the privilege of presiding this week at the West Africa Central Conference,” Bishop Holston said.  “One of the gifts of the United Methodist Connection is to see how God works in places near and far.

“Please pray that God will guide the delegates of the West Africa Central Conference to do God’s will in all that is before them.”

The Rev. Samuel J. Quire Jr. was elected bishop on the fourth ballot. The Rev. David Tokpah also was a candidate.
