The Advocacy Area of Connectional Ministries and South Carolina Ministries with Young People are excited to announce the 2018 Racial Reconciliation Youth Pilgrimage Cohort.

This program of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church follows up on the success of the Racial Reconciliation Pilgrimage events for adults and offers youth from around the South Carolina Conference an experience that allows them to learn and model effective communication skills around the difficult topic of racism.

The year-long group cohort is designed to offer high school youth an opportunity for learning and self-reflection in the area of racial reconciliation.

Youth in grades 9 through 12 in the South Carolina Conference who are interested in being a part of the Youth Pilgrimage Cohort must apply by Dec. 15, 2017.

The Youth Pilgrimage Cohort will feature five gatherings of all participants a Saturday in February, April, June, October and December. Participants will have opportunities to understand and identify their own presuppositions about racism and learn strategies to help strengthen their ability and comfort level in having healthy conversations about race relations.

An experiential excursion Aug. 1-5, 2018, will be modeled as a Freedom Ride across South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia and Alabama – with visits to civil rights museums and churches for conversation with people who participated in civil rights marches or whose family and friends marched.

Applications will be reviewed by the event design team, and acceptance will be on a first come-first served basis by district. Space is limited to 80 participants, so the design team will review applications and work to create a diverse group in terms of gender, ethnicity and geography to make the experience as impactful as possible.

Selected participants will be notified by the end of December 2017, at which time they will be asked to pay $50 to confirm their commitment to the program. The first cohort meeting is scheduled for Feb. 10, 2018.
